Evaluation
We start by getting to know your dog and understanding exactly what is happening with their knee. Your dog will receive a complete orthopedic evaluation and digital radiographs to assess the joint and help determine the best surgical approach. We’ll also talk with you about what to expect, answer your questions and make sure you feel comfortable with the plan before surgery.
Surgery
Dr. Lucas Moeder performs the TPLO procedure at Candlewood Veterinary Clinic using specialized bone-plating techniques. After surgery, your dog will receive pain management and detailed instructions for caring for them at home. Most dogs go home with buried, absorbable sutures, so there is no need to return simply to have stitches removed.
Recovery
Our team will be available to help you navigate the recovery process. Around eight weeks after surgery, we’ll take follow-up radiographs to check how the bone is healing and determine when your dog can safely begin returning to normal activities.
What Does TPLO Recovery Look Like?
TPLO recovery takes patience. For approximately 8 to 12 weeks, your dog will need restricted activity while the bone heals. That means no running, jumping, roughhousing or chasing squirrels, as tempting as those things may be.
You’ll receive clear instructions for gradually increasing your dog’s activity as they heal. Early recovery may include short, slow leash walks and gentle exercises, followed by gradually more activity as healing progresses.
Your job is to keep your dog comfortable, calm and on track. Our job is to give you the information and support you need to do that.
